Stop six: Napoli Mi Amore

If I was to tell the truth, I’d say that I was absolutely horrified when I reached Naples train station. It was dirty, and littered. After our plush stay in Rome, we couldn’t believe where we had got off the train. Hearts broken and confidence wained, we reluctantly began our trip to Via Toledo – a hugely popular and crowded part of the city.

In all fairness, the apartment was in a perfect location – surrounded by hundreds of cafes and on the main high street, meaning plenty of shops and things to do. However, we couldn’t deny that we had gone from riches to rags, staying in an apartment with no air con – and not even a fan! Except the later found bottle of Limoncello in the freezer softened the blow a tad.

However, everything changed the more we stayed there. We now describe Napoli as “unexpected” because everyday we would find something new, discover something brilliant or meet perhaps the most interesting people of our lives. More of that later.

Via Toledo was in fact the heart of Naples, and the backstreets were the arteries all leading from the central point. When we began exploring, we started to understand that if you wanted to be part of the Neopolitan culture, then you had to explore every nook and cranny of the city itself.

Being typical English girls, grown up impressioned by American films – we knew that Naples was also home to a famous pizzeria – featured in one of my favourite films, “eat, pray, love”. The film follows a woman who, after deciding not to settle down, travels to Italy to “eat”, India to “pray” and Bali to “love”. In Italy she stays in Rome but goes to Naples to eat pizza – of course!

The pizzeria was called “Da Michele”, and despite reading numerous reviews saying the wait time was at least 3 hours – we decided that it would be quiet around 9pm and there’s no way any pizza place could be that busy!!

We were wrong of course.

We were given a hot tip to order the pizza as a take away, and eat on the street with the locals. The tourists queued of course, whilst the locals were smart enough to sit out. Given that the evening was super super warm – we decided to do the same. 20 minutes later we had our pizza and our lifelong mission to find food which would change our lives forever began and ended with 8 slices of pizza.

We cannot emphasise enough how amazing the pizza was. I now will forever be let down by any pizza I have ever again. So I suppose that’s a downside of trying the “best pizza in Napoli”. A large claim but one which Da Michele definitely fills.

That same evening, we thought a few drinks should be in order. We had arrived safely and it was our last major spot before Taormina and the more relaxing beach-part of our Italian trip.

Yet again, little did we know that we would visit this bar every night whilst in Naples and meet some of my most favourite people – never mind just Italians. The bar was a hippy joint not too far down a backstreet near our apartment! It served vegetarian food in the day and beautiful strong cocktails in the evening! We met a waiter named Luca who was one of the most fabulous people in the world. He wore a bejewelled headband and worked as a hairdresser part time too. He served us every night from then on, and on our final day there – we went back to see him to persuade him to visit us in London. He agreed of course.

Naples was a more bar-type place where locals hung out and chilled, rather than partied in a nightclub. People would gather in the street or round terraces until 5/6 in the morning. You never ever feel alone in Naples.

I’m just going to spam a little bit with selfies from our nights out – as there were so many, I will try pick the best few.

For me, Napoli wasn’t about sight seeing or doing the tourist duty, it was about being a part of Neopolitan culture, and better yet, being accepted into it.

I made what felt like a new friend every single day in Naples. From the local cafe staff, to the waiters at restaurants, the owners of our local hang out places, other foreigner travellers, to families. It felt like a huge hug being part of a community so solid, it’s hard to believe such solidarity exists in a fairly lonely digital world.

A man, who later became my most favourite person there, said that “no matter where you are here, you are never alone”. And he couldn’t have been more correct. For someone who doesn’t like to be alone, I couldn’t have found a better safe haven.

We were shown the spots and the best bars, the best places to grab some food. We were spoilt rotten by the kindness, generosity and love that we were given. I even have a place to stay whenever I return. Let me explain a little about these fascinating friends.

One was called Pepe, which Cat decided to liken to the Pope. “You know, Papa … Pepe. Same thing”. Whether he likes it or not, he will forever remain Papa Pepe! He was an ex-parachuter for the army and was signed through conscription to fight for Italy. Upon serving his time, he joined an extreme left movement against the government and the “corrupt officials”. He does not believe in religion but in spirituality. Wearing an old Buddhist tattoo on his arm, he has travelled the world but remains forever at one in Naples. He married the most beautiful woman I have ever seen, and they moved to Spain and then Paris for her work. Pepe told us of how much he loved this woman, but as he follows his heart and his gut instinctively and has, for all his life, he recently left her to move back to Naples where his heart was born and will die.

Pepe managed to put life into perspective in just a few short sentences. He said that in the end we all leave the world alone anyway, and he has no time for pointless ventures when in his heart of hearts, he knows what and where makes him happy. For any person, and we are all guilty of it, who has put their life and happiness on the line for the sake of someone else’s, I urge you to think of Pepe and how no matter what – you should live for you and no one else.

The other man we met was called Alfie. He was born in New York but grew up Italian-American so spoke perfect Italian and fluent Neopolitan. He moved to Naples 17 years ago. He said that no matter where he’s been in the world – from Nicaragua to the Amazon, he has never felt as comfortable in a place than when he is in Naples. “Sometimes I think about leaving and moving back to the states to be with family but then I just leave my front door and it’s as though nowhere in the world will ever be as perfect”. I knew exactly what he meant in that moment. He was an avid surfer who lived life single so he could too do as he pleased (you can see why they are friends right?). He is an English teacher at a local university and grows his very well looked after “plants” on the side as a hobby and relaxation venture. I will leave that open to interpretation. Taking each day as it comes but booking a few months out to travel to different parts of the world he hasn’t yet seen, he knows about every culture, every region and every person. Alfie is perhaps the most inspiring person I will ever get the pleasure of meeting and for that, I am quite upset.

Alongside Napoli being the central hub of family and community, it is also the place for food! Julia Roberts doesn’t just go here to chat – she came to eat! And we did so too!!

Besides eating our weight in carbs and drinking too many cups of coffee – we also visited the island of Capri. Where Phoebe was stuck on a boat too long and took her first (no doubt not the last) burn.

We managed to see the famous Blue Grotto too which is a sea cave near the Island – it was a 2 minute journey with a whopping price tag. But I suppose – the cliche saying goes – you only live once.

From quirky cars like the one below to a beautiful Duomo – Napoli really was the unexpected city.

And also a city I could definitely call home. Just like in my Milan post, I said it was very rare, and you were incredibly lucky to find anywhere you feel completely at ease – that same feeling I felt for Milan came back to me here in Naples. So much so that sitting here typing about my experience almost makes me feel hollow – as though Napoli made me whole.

There are no words to express how this city operates and breathes but if you are lucky enough to be accepted, you will never feel alone again.

I will be running back to Naples with a huge heart and a bigger appetite, but for now, the adventure must continue.

Thank you for being my life jacket! Ciao for now. 🙋🏻

Spring/Summer Loves Orientalism: High Street Fashion

With the turning of the seasons, I am compelled to remember my Bali holiday last year where Orientalism and Asian design were both quite obviously commonplace. Perhaps I took the vivacious colours, floral prints and silk fabrics for granted, as now we see Spring/Summer bring the best of Asian fusion design.

10959343_907172002636903_176573999315036285_n 11002629_907172012636902_3880758784898440571_n

After seeing Rochelle from the Saturdays fashion Victoria Beckham’s tunic red dress, I was enthused with ideas of what to buy for the warmer season. The blood oranges, striking rouges and contrasting black makes for the perfect summer attire, whether rain or shine. So I decided to put together a few ideas to spice up your new season (oriental) wardrobe.

TOP 3 BEST PICKS FOR SS15

1. The Wallflower Look

5-flower-power1This image was taken recently at Paris Fashion Week 2015 of a look fashioned by Carolina Herrera. I’m sure you agree – never has the concept of large floral prints ever-felt fresher for spring. Big and beautiful, like pictured above, or minute and abstract, so long as the flowers are bold and feminine – you will be right on trend.

2. Printed Skirts

3-flower-power1

Miu Miu certainly delivers this year at New York Fashion Week on the success scale of orientalism. This Asian – fused inspired printed skirt turns heads as the velvet fabric sits perfectly on the models frame. Paired with a basic vest, heels and nude bag, the beauty of the skirts sky blue colour really comes alive.

3. Asian Dress

2-flower-power1

Céline certainly gets my recommendation this season with her floral print floor – length dress. In keeping with traditional oriental colours such as reds, blues and greens, this summery attire leaves even the discerning gentlemen eye-locked.

Whether you’re enjoying a romantic sojourn away, a trip with friends or just staying in the UK this summer, you have no excuse to not make the most of the scintillating colour trend. Especially for my readers, and the loyal fashionistas, I will advise you what to buy, to get ‘the look’.

Killer Heels

With all the excitement regarding Spring/Summer finally hitting most of the stores in the area, I decided to take a look at the new (and fabulous) campaign by Louboutin for his new range of shoes. The project was accurately named “Killer Heels” and when you take a look through these snaps, you’ll see why…

This season, Louboutin focuses on creating the dizzying heights of heels that some of us girls honestly dread wearing… The classic “No, I’ll buy these and wear them… I’ll learn to walk properly in them!”… When in reality, those shoes are still in our wardrobe waiting for the “right occasion” to wear them. That occasion probably won’t ever happen.. Except, I can’t help but love what Louboutin has done this season. Keeping entirely faithful to his love for Paris and being an exemplary Parisian, Christian takes us on a journey of what it means to be feminine and addicted to shoes.

01_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER 02_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER-2 03_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER 04_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER 05_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER 06_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER 07_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER 08_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER 09_LOUBOUTIN_RENE_HABERMACHER

So if you’re going to fall, or a diva fit, you may as well do it in 6inch Louboutins!

The Devil Wears Westwood

I feel like I’m apologising far too much for my absence on MNSFL but I have some super exciting news: I HAVE A REAL JOB. Not only is it a ‘proper job’ (all students/ ex – students will understand), it’s a fashion writing position based in Bristol. How exciting is that! What’s more, it’s working with my favourite designer brands, such as Vivienne Westwood, Victoria Beckham and Versace (the 3V’s).

So this blog is more a chance for me to express my excitement via words and to explain why I’ve been away, than to speak pure fashion but please follow my journey anyway! Instead of apologising for my lack of writing, I will propose that my blog will now be written once weekly as trying to juggle a job (which I started on Wednesday), my degree and this blog is getting quite difficult.

So, I am now a fully fledged fashion writer for Garment Quarter in Bristol. Check out our website: https://www.garmentquarter.com and get involved, this boutique may be small but it’s a fabulous profitable business with some high – end designer brands that will probably be of interest to most of you reading.

Let me show you around anyway:

Deciding to be the lovely daughter I am, I bought my mum one of the biggest new Westwood bags to hit our store and soon to hit nationwide. Pictured in a green hue with a leopard overlay, this new season essential just screams out to my mum! Let’s hope she loves it as much as I do. Can you believe I used the last of my money to buy her a bag and didn’t even use my generous discount on myself?! I have become altruistic in my professional life…

Looking intellectual, I’m hoping this new fashion world is for me because let’s face it guys – it’s everyone’s dream! After thinking about the film the ‘Devil Wears Prada’, I decided that i’m more like the Devil in Westwood – for now anyway! In a few years, if you see my blog post entitled ‘The Devil Wears Chanel’ you know i’ve made it!!

So that’s what I’m doing if you don’t hear from me – and i’m swamped! But i’m definitely going to keep posting my various outfits here and hopefully you’ll see some major names when I start getting paid – yay!!

The most luxurious of boutiques!

Obviously it’s Valentines Day, and I received love in the shape of a little turquoise box… which can only be…. Tiffany!

The best jewellery box!

The best jewellery box!

If you know me, you will know i’ve worn Tiffany from the age of two – so i’d like to think I’m a bit of a connoisseur with the brand. I have held an affinity with Tiffany even before I was born… intact, it’s just that, I was BORN to wear Tiffany.

Gorgeous present

So I’m also now wearing a Tiffany affinity ring which has ‘I love you’ engraved on the silver band – absolute J’adore. Couldn’t ask for a better gift – I’ve been the luckiest girl this week. From new job to new Tiffany, what could be better?

I almost forgot that I haven’t posted about my major 21st birthday present! Finally made to fit perfectly, I received this diamond – encrusted platinum princess – cut ring:

The camera doesn’t do it justice – this is perhaps the most gorgeous diamond ring you will ever see – perhaps ever.

I still remember a quote from my favourite film Breakfast at Tiffany’s when Audrey Hepburn says:

Personally, I think it’s a bit tacky to wear diamonds before I’m 40.

Well on this occasion Audrey, I think you can never be too young for diamonds and having worn them round my neck and in my ears for years now, it’s the natural progression to having thousands of them in a ring also! Let’s hope my engagement ring will be half as fabulous….

So here’s to a great start to 2015 and let everyday be a great one!

Snowy and Stylish

Again, I start this blog by apologising for how late this post is – except this time I have a valid reason – I was skiing (further 21st celebrations!). I was contemplating writing a blog about my favourite gift this year but instead, I thought I’d wait and find inspiration in the slopes and the French fashion couture. I must admit however, there wasn’t half the amount of fashion frenchies I had hoped for, so instead – I’ll show you what I was up to and wearing!

Firstly, I want to show you the first thing I unwrapped on my actual birthday – the best box and brand perhaps ever!

Burberry sunglasses! Kerching - perfect for the slopes!

I’m sure if you read my blogs, you are well aware of my love for Burberry, and so this gift was one of my absolute faves! They proved perfect in the snow and actually looked rather chic, even if I do say so myself!

Burberry working it's magic!

Burberry working it’s magic!

Although it’s really difficult to look stylish and effortless coming down the high Tignes slopes – it doesn’t stop me from trying. Above you can see my white (as snow) skiing jacket with matching salopettes! My ski’s were luckily white and red too – so matched perfectly!

So I suppose if you can’t find a super funky snow suit, you need to find some super funky thermals – and you have to agree – I did just that! Let me introduce you to the realm of Sweaty Betty. SB is a relatively new and upcoming sports fashion boutique with shops growing globally – absolute J’adore. All my beach wear, swim wear, yoga clothes and running gear is all bought from there – so I decided a pair of thermals had to be purchased too! At a very reasonable price of £100 for the set, these warm bad boys were perfect for the -10 degrees mountain air!

Absolutely can't go wrong with these thermals, complete ski chic!

Absolutely can’t go wrong with these thermals, complete ski chic!

Toward the end of the week, there actually was a blizzard which proved quite difficult for my friends to see me coming down the slopes! So of course, to be extra careful, I advise you go for difficult colours. I mean – look at these beauties:

Just because you aren't wearing white - doesn't mean you don't look fabulous!

Just because you aren’t wearing white – doesn’t mean you don’t look fabulous!

Tip: I highly recommend you taking a GoPro skiing – we have some great footage I’d love to post when it’s been edited for the blog!

Before I left for Tignes and Val D’isere however, I was enjoying the snow up North where my family live – and so I thought I’d prove that just because it’s cold – doesn’t mean layering can’t still look fashionable!

For a premature birthday lunch, I decided to suit and boot in my All Saints cashmere sweater, Moschino scarf and fabulous hunter wellies – and even if I do say so myself, I’m as snug as a bug and still looking trendy:

10940463_10203785219407135_4231951474575110056_n

(Apologies about the unclassy dog – bed of course!)

I then covered up more with a faux fur jacket and a matching real fox fur hat – to give it that extra Moscow chic you should all desire:

With some Whistles mittens and burgundy dark lipstick, you can't go wrong - Winter fashion is the way forward!

With some Whistles mittens and burgundy dark lipstick, you can’t go wrong – Winter fashion is the way forward!

I know a lot of girls don’t like layering as they claim it makes them look weighty but honestly, that isn’t the case! I’m the coldest girl in the world, and I am forced to layer up but I don’t let the cold beat me!! A key tip is to layer up on your top half with cashmere and fur, and wear skinny’s with high boots on the bottom – makes you look fashionable but also (and most importantly) WARM.

Three wise monkeys - all in fur. Much love to my fashionable mother and nanna!

I suppose my main point was that whatever the weather – warm, wet or snow – you have no excuse to not look your best!

Black Swan – inspired 21st!

Firstly, apologies for taking some time in writing this blog post, as I know I haven’t written in a few days – but, I was organising my 21st birthday party!

This blog post is a little more personal than my others, but I want the main focus to be on the costume and makeup – not how great my party was (although, it’s safe to say it was pretty awesome!)

So – after seeing Vogue’s top trends and noticing how the “Black swan” fad was quickly approaching this season, I decided to do a little DIY, dig up some inspiration and made my own birthday costume!

All I bought was a black corset and a black tutu, and separately purchased the black diamante’s, feathers and a glue gun (note: get a LOT of glue, because they run out quick).

Step one: Buy a tutu and black corset

Plain black corset and black tutu, found and bought on Ebay for £20

Step three: Buy your diamante’s and feathers!

OK so now I’m going to talk you through how I did it – but by all means experiment yourselves as I’ve never done textiles nor art so I’m sure a fair few of my readers will be able to create a much better final product!

First, of all, I cut away at the corset so that it gave it the tattered look it needs (especially when you’re black swan!)

As you can see, I just cut away at the edges to give the triangular finish the outfit needs!

As you can see, I just cut away at the edges to give the triangular finish the outfit needs!

By this point however, I’d already attached some of the diamante’s on one of the breasts, whereas the other breast needed feathers (so don’t get carried away and do both!). Although the feathered breast still needs to be jewelled, don’t be tempted to do this before the feathers have been stuck down and dried for you may not get the same final look!

This is a photo taken after I glued on the diamante's. And also I have feathered part of the left breast to show you where the diamante's need to be. Although not the final product, you can see the outfit starting to come together. Tip: When applying the diamante's with the glue gun, glue your fabric first and then apply the jewel after using tweezers - they are super fiddly!

As it’s drying – keep adding more feathers and jewels where you want them – so you can achieve an overall swan – like look.

With the tutu, I firstly started by just applying feathers to the top of the skirt so that it gave a nice feathered – skirt like texture. It also meant that you couldn’t see anything underneath – because the tutu was cheap – it was also very revealing.

You can see the feathers and the way I started attaching them to the tutu here. A close up will be shown below on the texture it gives!

And then put the two together – adding more feathers to the left breast where necessary and adding that little bit of detail and diamante’s to the tutu – I found that front right looked the best! And……

Final product - tada!!

Final product – tada!!

Voila! I realise that I perhaps should have done this as a vlog, rather than a word blog but I was too excited at the time to do anything about it!! I’m just glad I remembered to take pictures of the various stages.

Don’t forget to get your makeup done too – I personally recommend NARS who did this masterpiece (making my eyes look amazing!!)

Thank you Leila at NARS for being so good at your job! Amazing work by the makeup artist!

My pick of the top trends for SS15

After indulging in this month’s Vogue, I decided to put together a short blog post to give my readers insight into my top picks for the new season – an insight into my next purchases and the reasoning behind my choices!

Without further ado…

1. Khaki

Khaki catwalk sensations. From left to right: Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren

I’m actually loving the new Chanel season, not for the clothes pictured above as it seems a little ‘unloved single mum’, but for the fact the fashion house is adopting the new theme of feminist protest. With a profound love and interest in feminist movements, Chanel couldn’t be more spot on with supporting current societal and revolutionary change.

Power to the individual. Empowerment of women.

2. Hippy Deluxe

The 1970s Marrakech inspired 'Hippy deluxe' theme comes back this Summer! From left to right: Alberta Ferretti, Etro, Chloé

I recently watched the Yves Saint Laurent film (highly recommend) and was wondering when the Marrakech – inspired couture fashion range was going to make it’s comeback! This look inspired Yves’ greatest work, marking the turning point of his life and career, he actually became one of the richest dead people ever! Quite the achievement. Etro’s kaleidoscope motifs makes for the perfect summer dress – I think I need one of these, for sure.

3. Lace

White lace is a favourite this Summer. Showing bits of skin increases the desire of both the fabric, dress and the lady underneath. From left to right: Valentino, Chloé, Louis Vuitton

Resembling Greek heroines, the models look delicate and desirable in the romantic white lace. The gladiator sandals only serve to emphasise the beauty of the final piece – alongside that breathtaking ethereal lace of course! My bets are on Topshop copying this design in their upcoming season – so those who are more cost – conscious, keep your eyes pealed!

4. Ballerina

Ballerina. Perhaps the best look of the season. From left to right: From left to right: Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Alberta Ferretti

Ballerina. Perhaps the best look of the season. From left to right: Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Alberta Ferretti

This has and always will be my childhood dream – being a ballerina! And not for the dance or their spectacular posture and figures, but the chance to spend 99% of your time in a tutu with a tight top knot seems irresistible to the fashion conscious. Nothing screams more couture like the look of glamorous ballerina – think Natalie Portman in Black Swan!

So obviously with the new season plie(ing) their way toward the Royal Ballet, I will be adopting the look by investing a replica of Ferretti’s take on the theme! A long tutu is a new season must – have!

This is actually a style I would like to say I’ve already mastered – perhaps a little ahead of time but nevertheless. Last month I invested in a short feathered and fringed skirt as featured above by Fendi – the detail and the cut gives you that ‘night time bird’ feel and is perfect with a well designed but simple leotard or black crop-top. The dark fabrics represent the shadows of the night, again evoking those images of the black swan who flees the scene with her strong black wings.

6. The androgynous tailoring

Absolutely LOVED this look when it first appeared a few years ago and ADORE the fact it’s still going strong. As a girl who picks jeans over skirts and boots over ballet pumps, this trend was a godsend – it gave me an excuse to look androgynous (the way I always kind of have!)

This season however, the emphasis is on the androgynous tailoring – taking the look right back to basics and bringing forward the idea that a woman can look equally as sexy in a masculine suit. To see more of this trend, also (as mentioned earlier) take a closer look at Chanel’s new season working with the feminist phenomenon.

My new season must – haves:

  • Khaki/ Military boots – Vivienne Westwood Seditionaries (CHECK)
  • The Etro kaleidoscope – inspired hippie dress
  • A long tutu skirt – ideally in pastel colours resemblant of the ballerina theme
  • A feathered/ fringed crop top to sit perfectly with my already bought skirt

Make sure you guys keep an eye on the high – street for whatever replica’s they bring out this season! Just because you don’t have the big names, doesn’t mean you’re not a fashion pioneer!

I’m looking forward to the new season,

My not so fair lady xox
